I want to respond to the comments about people not claiming their black ancestry while claiming native American ancestry because this issue is something that has really affected my family. My grandmother always told us that her grandfather was Indian and owned slaves but that he was "very good to them because they were his family." I grew up thinking my grandmother was just nuts, and maybe a liar to boot. She absolutely hated black people, regularly used the "N" word, and became violently angry when she found out my sister was dating a black man. She and my mother both said, many times, "you can't date a black man no matter how much you love him because your children would have terrible lives." Finally, I did my research and found out my g g grandfather really did own slaves, and that some people said he was half black and the family said he was half Indian. Further research revealed he was both. He was black and Indian with some white slave owner blood in him. He was white enough to fight in a white unit in the civil war and then buy his family. The slaves he owned were indeed his family members that he had been able to buy. His children and grandchildren and great grandchildren lived in dirt floor shacks in the Ozark mountains. My grandmother gave birth to all of her children in one of those shacks. They were the poorest of the poor, the outcasts of society. In the 50s the US government went out to the Ozarks recruiting poor illiterate hillbillies to work at Sunflower Ammunition Plant in Kansas. The housing they provided was poor by anybody else's standards but they had a real floor, and plumbing, electricity, and enough to eat. My grandmother knew it would be best if nobody knew about her black blood and only claimed her Indian blood to explain her very black hair. Indian reservations were bad and the conditions for people with black in them were even worse. She wasn't being prejudiced when she tried to get us to leave our black blood behind, she was trying to prevent us from suffering the way she had. It turns out that this tall, lanky white man was trying to ask her about information on one of the products written in Chinese. As soon as I saw that, I was pissed. I came up to him and asked, "What do you want?" The man then proceeded to turn to ME and ask the same questions! After I responded, "No, I don't understand that...", and after one of the ACTUAL employees quickly came to assist that idiot, I couldn't help feeling baffled. First of all, that white man ASSUMED that the both of us worked there, simply because we looked Asian and despite the fact that we were just wearing regular clothes. Secondly, he assumed that we understood how to read the language he was asking about, just because we looked Asian. (And how DARE HE kept pestering my disabled sister about it, despite the fact that, knowing her, she probably told him that she wanted to be left alone multiple times!) I mean, couldn't he had simply looked for people wearing uniforms or name badges INSTEAD of bothering EVERY Asian person he saw?

Not too long after, a third incident happened at a Filipino-owned laundromat. I was wearing "lazy" clothes, hair tied in a ponytail. I was just about to move my newly-washed clothes out of the machine, when, out of nowhere, a black man came up to me and asked, "Excuse me, do you work here?" Before I had time to react, another person directed him to a woman who actually WAS working there. Later on, after my mother picked me up, I was feeling completely humiliated, baffled, and angry, on top of the crappy mood I was already in BEFORE I entered the laundromat. I would have thought that, being a black man and part of a race that is a victim of both discrimination AND micro-aggressions on a daily basis, he would exercise more caution. But, no-- he was simply another person who probably couldn't care less.

To this day, those past 3 incidents carry a heavy burden on my mind. Not only does this burden damage my self-esteem, and open my eyes to hurtful racial dynamics, but it even causes me to wonder things like: Am I that unattractive? Is the image of the "lowly, faceless Asian worker" the FIRST thing that enters people's minds when they see me? Am I pretty much NOTHING but conglomerated stereotypes in the eyes of this society?
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/528074983146803930/596278847787571809/comments/default/1387619786799460820
self
application/atom+xml
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/528074983146803930/596278847787571809/comments/default/1387619786799460820
alternate
text/html
http://stuffwhitepeopledo.blogspot.com/2009/08/mistake-non-white-people-for-service.html?showComment=1376693788436#c1387619786799460820
{"$t":"Anonymous
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$in-reply-to":{"xmlns$thr":"http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0
"gd$extendedProperty":
{"$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-528074983146803930.post-6906011830080647688
$t":"2013-08-01T17:36:00.948-07:00
$t":"2013-08-01T17:36:00.948-07:00
text","$t":"Embedded in a POC's experience is a greater af...
html","$t":"Embedded in a POC's experience is a greater affinity to identify and gather inspiration from the family unit, traditions, religion, stories/legends, ancient principles, values, beliefs, and honor. I did have a grandmother who was Black Dutch, the native peoples of that part of Europe. That also led to the twisted account of Native American blood. First of all, never just go up to a random Asian American you don't know to ask about their ethnicity. If you don't even know this person, it would be false to claim that your question is out of genuine interest in them. But if you do know them or met them through a natural social context, talk about other things first. Find out their interests, their points of view on certain topics, anything that shows that their ethnicity was not the first thing you wondered about when you met them. After all, if you want to get to know someone, beliefs/interests tell much more about the person than ethnic origin. When you've established that you are genuinely interested in getting to know them, create a context in which YOUR ethnicity gets mentioned naturally in conversation (like if you're talking about beer, you could joke "Yeah, I do enjoy a good Guinness. Can't help my Irish genes.") When someone happens to mention his/her ethnicity first, it helps me feel less like the topic of ethnicity came up because of my Asian face. And it also lets me know that the person is aware that we're talking purely about ethnicity, and not making assumptions about nationality or cultural upbringing. After all, if another American recognizes he/she has an ethnic origin outside of America, then I won't feel like I'm being perceived as not American when I mention my ethnicity. Because it IS offensive when we realize a white American has the mentality, "Oh, I'm just American, but what are you?" So make it clear that you realize this person is as American as you are but that you both have ethnic origins outside of the US. However, if this person still does not want to share his/her ethnic origin, don't push it. Hope that helps!
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/528074983146803930/7678934115712567753/comments/default/2799346114125061
self
application/atom+xml
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/528074983146803930/7678934115712567753/comments/default/2799346114125061
alternate
text/html
http://stuffwhitepeopledo.blogspot.com/2008/05/ask-asian-americans-where-theyre-really.html?showComment=1372671088839#c2799346114125061
{"$t":"Anonymous
$t":"https://www.blogger.com/profile/01807664573715461433
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$in-reply-to":{"xmlns$thr":"http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0
"gd$extendedProperty":
{"$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-528074983146803930.post-7542868189196001920
$t":"2013-07-01T02:30:41.976-07:00
$t":"2013-07-01T02:30:41.976-07:00
text","$t":"I've never encountered a case in which someone...
html","$t":"I've never encountered a case in which someone who's actually foreign (as is the case with the girl you met who struggles with English), get offended by the question, "Where are you from?" The fact is, this individual IS personally from another country. If you're reasonably sure that she (not just her ancestors) immigrated from another country, the best way is to simply ask where she's from.

I think some of the people here are saying that this blog doesn't answer their question of "How do you ask Asian Americans about their ethnicity without offending them?" But the fact that this question is still lingering in their minds shows they didn't understand the point of this post. Even if you phrase the question in the most PC manner, the fact that you need to find out an Asian American's ethnicity is in itself somewhat offensive. You're treating someone differently because of his/her race (unless you equally often ask white/black/Latino people about their ethnicity). One commenter mentioned that he/she is not offended when people ask about his/her Caucasian heritage. The question itself is not offensive. But when that question becomes the rule rather than the exception when you meet people, including from random strangers coming up to you just to ask about your ethnicity, then it will cause you to feel like you are perceived as a foreigner by your own country, and THAT is what we find offensive. If we Asian Americans only get asked that question as often as white Americans get asked, then this would not be an issue. It's not because we want to hide our ethnicity or that we're not proud of it. We just see it as a double standard that we're expected to label ourselves with an ethnicity while White Americans are not. And if the question is out of genuine interest in getting to know someone, does that imply you're not interested in getting to know people of other races to whom you don't ask the question?

That being said, most Asian Americans I know don't truly get offended by the question. We just usually find it annoying (considering you might be like the 10th person that week that we just met who felt the need to ask us that), and we may get a first impression of you as ignorant, even if we realize you were well-intentioned.
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/528074983146803930/7678934115712567753/comments/default/7542868189196001920
self
application/atom+xml
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/528074983146803930/7678934115712567753/comments/default/7542868189196001920
alternate
text/html
http://stuffwhitepeopledo.blogspot.com/2008/05/ask-asian-americans-where-theyre-really.html?showComment=1372671041976#c7542868189196001920
{"$t":"Anonymous
$t":"https://www.blogger.com/profile/01807664573715461433
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$in-reply-to":{"xmlns$thr":"http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0
"gd$extendedProperty":
{"$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-528074983146803930.post-4443831546341211307
$t":"2013-06-29T15:08:45.887-07:00
$t":"2013-06-29T15:08:45.887-07:00
text","$t":""..please keep in mind that there are some th...
html","$t":"
"..please keep in mind that there are some that genuinely do have family memebers that have tribal affiliations, they just may not have had the opportunity to fully grow and be a part of what they are."

Thanks for saying this
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/528074983146803930/4795844829854109746/comments/default/4443831546341211307
self
application/atom+xml
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/528074983146803930/4795844829854109746/comments/default/4443831546341211307
alternate
text/html
http://stuffwhitepeopledo.blogspot.com/2009/06/claim-they-have-native-american-blood.html?showComment=1372543725887#c4443831546341211307
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/528074983146803930/4795844829854109746/comments/default/3504713011245698957
$t":"BrendaInIA
$t":"https://www.blogger.com/profile/05698896249655885896
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$in-reply-to":{"xmlns$thr":"http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0
"gd$extendedProperty":
{"$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-528074983146803930.post-973175029352469465
$t":"2013-06-28T06:43:40.002-07:00
$t":"2013-06-28T06:43:40.002-07:00
text","$t":"My family has another spin... the nation recognize...
html","$t":"My family has another spin... the nation recognizes their status but they can't register. But there's also some nasty politics regarding the dawes roll and more specific political schemes with some bands, to which recognition might be established but can be denied - some more reflective on u.s. treaties from way back when - one route is those that had private land, wanted to keep their land and refused to move to indian designated areas ... so they lost the right to apply to the dawes, sadder bit most of them lost their land anyway and fell into another unprotected class altogether - not having the limited protections of official indian status but not really being consider 'white' either. modern day, it's been a case by case basis, far and few, taken to a vote ... even if someone from that line has been approved it doesn't mean their siblings have right to it too. But a lot of that gets complicated and varies between the times and whatever the trending politics are. And of course, there's more recent actions, decisions which create inner barriers, or lead to expulsion. There's the drama of the freedmen - which brought back the one drop rule (for whether you're more nation or more freedman) even in families that had more native blood than a fair deal of the leaders... in just the last few decades.)
